Addressing the Concerns of Our Valued Retirees

As the Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) continues its advocacy work during the 2024 legislative session, we want to reassure our retiree members that your needs and concerns are at the forefront of our agenda. While our current focus includes membership growth and budget amendments for active employees, we are equally committed to enhancing benefits for our retirees.

Understanding the Challenges

We recognize the concerns expressed by our retiree members, particularly regarding the cost of living adjustments (COLAs) and healthcare costs. It’s true that in recent years, the increase in living costs has been a significant challenge, and we understand the need for more robust support for our retired community.

Past Successes and Ongoing Efforts

The VGEA has a history of advocating for retiree benefits. We successfully introduced legislation ensuring that Virginia Retirement System (VRS) retirees receive an annual COLA, a milestone achievement that continues to benefit retirees today. Last year, we supported legislation to increase the healthcare credit for all retirees, a change that will take effect this July.

• Also, note that not every retiree will qualify for the health insurance credit. To be eligible, you must have a minimum of 15 years of service.

We acknowledge, however, that the fight for fair and sufficient benefits is ongoing. The disparity between COLAs and actual living costs is a concern that we are keenly aware of. While there may not be a specific bill addressing this in the current session, it remains a key area of focus for us.

Future Advocacy for Retiree Benefits

Looking ahead, VGEA is dedicated to revisiting and reinforcing efforts to enhance retiree benefits. We are exploring various avenues to advocate for improved COLAs that truly reflect the inflation and cost-of-living increases.
