Since securing the first State Employee Hospitalization Insurance program in 1971, safeguarding health benefits has been at the heart of our mission.

VGEA’s Role in Healthcare Advocacy

Our relentless efforts ensure that state employees and retirees have access to quality health insurance plans with manageable premiums. VGEA was instrumental in establishing the retiree Health Insurance Credit (HIC) to assist state retirees with health insurance costs after their service ends. We continue to advocate for periodic increases in the HIC amount, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to your long-term health and financial security.

Health Insurance Fund (HIF) Oversight

The Health Insurance Fund, sustained through employer and employee contributions, guarantees that there are enough resources to cover both routine and extraordinary medical expenses. VGEA’s vigilant oversight ensures this fund is managed prudently, maintaining its financial integrity for your peace of mind.

Monitoring Third-Party Administrator Contracts

We also oversee the contracts managed by the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) for administering health insurance plans. This ensures that you receive the best possible coverage efficiently and cost-effectively.
