Championing Telework Opportunities

Our Unwavering Commitment to Telework Advocacy

At the Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA), we understand the profound impact telework can have on the lives of our valued state employees. Telework arrangements offer a multitude of benefits, including improved work-life balance, increased productivity, reduced commuting times, and enhanced recruitment and retention. Recognizing these advantages, the VGEA has been at the forefront of advocating for telework expansion and fair implementation policies.

Our Role in the 2022 Telework Decision

When Governor Youngkin’s administration announced the revision of the telework policy in 2022, the VGEA swiftly intervened to protect the telework rights of our members. We actively engaged with the administration, sharing our members’ experiences and concerns to ensure that the revised policy would not undermine the flexibility and benefits telework provides.

Our Ongoing Advocacy for Hybrid and Fair Telework

While the VGEA acknowledges the administration’s efforts to address some of the concerns raised, we remain committed to advocating for a more comprehensive and fair telework policy. We believe that hybrid work arrangements, which combine in-office and remote work, offer the best balance between employee needs and organizational effectiveness.

The Growing Demand for Hybrid Work

The demand for hybrid work arrangements is undeniable. A comprehensive telework study by McKinsey & Company found that “eighty-seven percent of workers offered at least some remote work embrace the opportunity and spend an average of three days a week working from home.” This trend is driven by the recognition that hybrid work enhances employee satisfaction, productivity, and retention.

“Hybrid work is here to stay,” stated an article in The Wall Street Journal, highlighting the growing preference for flexible work arrangements among today’s workforce.
