VGEA Member Benefits

Representation, Advocacy, and Guidance

Joining the VGEA means that you have representation. It means that you are heard in all the right places as an employee or retiree of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We gather all the “need to know” information to present to our members, and give you the guidance you need about how to contact legislators, how to express your opinion on key legislation, and the impact of your actions. The Commonwealth works because we work. With all the decisions our state leaders consider, the VGEA is here to ensure we are included.

Workplace Protection

The VGEA provides advice and action, when necessary, to protect your workplace rights; whether they are violated through discriminatory actions, misinterpretation, misapplication of state personnel policies and rules, or an unjust regulation or law.

ForeSight Newsletter

The ForeSight newsletter is produced several times a year to keep you updated about the latest happenings in the VGEA, the General Assembly, the Governor’s Administration, and the state government. (Available in hard copy and electronic form.)

VGEA eNews

The eNews is a quick read covering what is going on at the General Assembly and inside the VGEA. (Available only in electronic form.)

VGEA eNews Legislative Report

The most up-to-the-minute General Assembly information about the state budget, legislative proposals, and committee actions is published weekly in the eNews Legislative Report newsletter sent to all VGEA members with email addresses. Legislative Tracking: any bill that may impact state workers and retirees is listed individually, along with status, until they are killed or signed by the Governor. This is a vital resource to tell you when to expect your next raise, health care change, or retirement increase. (Available only in electronic form.)

Insurance

Every member of the VGEA receives an automatic Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance benefit of $4,000 when they join just for being a member. No further action is needed, and there is no additional cost to you beyond your VGEA dues. Other discounted insurance programs are also available: auto, critical illness, dental, group term life, hospital indemnity, identity theft, legal, long-term care, and short-term disability insurance. Call the VGEA office at 804-355-3120 or 877-302-7146 for more information.

Awards are presented to students who are VGEA members or the spouses, children, and grandchildren of members each spring for the following fall semester. Applications for each year are posted in the late fall for the following spring awards.

Working to Keep Virginia Working

VGEA is the only statewide organization for the broad range of Commonwealth employees.

While there are more than 160,000 of us working in a vast array of professions and jobs, we unite in a desire to be recognized for our dedication to making Virginia a great state.

In short, The Commonwealth of Virginia works because we do!

Whether it’s increasing salaries, improving work conditions or any of the many other employee issues, VGEA is here to help address them all. A strong association with representative members is recognized and invited to decision-making tables in state government. We strive to be relevant, from the 21-year-old new employee to the 100-year-old retiree.

Every employee benefits from the experience and dedication VGEA brings. VGEA matters because you matter!
