Take Action

Employing lobbyists is an effective way to advocate for the interests of our members. Those meetings with legislators, staff, and other decision-makers allow us to educate them about issues and persuade them to support or oppose specific legislation. However, lobbying is just one piece of the puzzle.

If we want to see our bills pass, we need the support of our VGEA members.

Here are eight ways that VGEA members can mobilize and take action to support our lobbying efforts:

1. Contact legislators: One of the most effective ways to influence legislators is by contacting them directly. Association members can call, email, or write to their legislators to express their support or opposition to a particular bill. Find your legislators at whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov.

2. Get other employees and retirees involved: Help advance legislation by asking other employees and retirees to get involved. Rally support and encourage them to contact their elected representatives and express their support for the legislation.

3. Attend committee hearings: Another way to make an impact is by attending committee hearings and speaking out in support of or opposition to a bill.

4. Participate in grassroots campaigns: Association members can also get involved in grassroots campaigns. This can include writing letters to the editor, posting on social media, or participating in rallies or other events.

5. Host a legislator: Invite a legislator to visit the association or meet with its members can be a great way to build relationships and educate them about the issues that matter to the association.

6. Testify at public hearings: Public hearings provide an opportunity for association members to share their experiences and perspective on a bill with legislators and other decision-makers.

7. Support candidates who support VGEA priorities: Elections have consequences, and supporting candidates who understand and advocate for the needs Virginia’s employees and retirees can help ensure that the legislature is more favorable to our interests.

8. Grow the VGEA: Association members can advance legislation by helping VGEA grow its membership, as a larger membership base amplifies the association’s collective voice and increases its advocacy power for legislative initiatives.

By participating in these activities, VGEA members can help ensure that our lobbying efforts are successful and that our bills are passed into law. As always, we’re listening and advocating for you. If we can help you advocate, reach out at info@vgea.org with questions, comments, or concerns.

Working to Keep Virginia Working

VGEA is the only statewide organization for the broad range of Commonwealth employees.

While there are more than 160,000 of us working in a vast array of professions and jobs, we unite in a desire to be recognized for our dedication to making Virginia a great state.

In short, The Commonwealth of Virginia works because we do!

Whether it’s increasing salaries, improving work conditions or any of the many other employee issues, VGEA is here to help address them all. A strong association with representative members is recognized and invited to decision-making tables in state government. We strive to be relevant, from the 21-year-old new employee to the 100-year-old retiree.

Every employee benefits from the experience and dedication VGEA brings. VGEA matters because you matter!
