College Scholarship

The Virginia Governmental Employee Association (VGEA) awards a college scholarship annually to a VGEA member or family member.

The award is presented to students who are VGEA members or the spouses, children, and grandchildren of members.

This year, the VGEA will award one (1) scholarship of $500 for the 2024 Fall Semester.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible, you need to either be a VGEA member, spouse, child, or grandchild of a member. The member needs to have been a VGEA member in good standing for a full year prior to the application date.
  • Members of the VGEA Board of Directors, VGEA employees, and VGEA contractors are not eligible, and their spouses, children, and grandchildren are also not eligible.
  • Previous VGEA scholarship winners are not eligible.
  • Only the first 100 applications received will be accepted.

Application Packet

The VGEA Scholarship Application Packet must include the following for consideration:

  • All lines on the College Scholarship application form are filled out.
  • One reference letter from a supervisor or teacher and one personal reference (non-family member) must be submitted with the application and the letter is no longer than two pages.
  • Write an essay that is no longer than two pages double-spaced with 12-point font and 1-inch page margins on the following topic: What do you consider your personal accomplishments and how do they relate to your field of study and your future goals? Must follow APA or MLA format.
  • Include your name on each header page.
  • Include a bio of 250 words or less.
  • Include a headshot photo.

Guidelines and Procedures

  • Candidates must attend a college, university, or technical institution accredited by the State Council on Higher Education (SCHEV accredited) or state equivalent.
  • Candidates must submit the entire application packet at one time with their name on each page to be considered an applicant.
  • Each application packet submitted must be formatted in MS Word or PDF. Please, no GIFs, PNGs, or other image files.
  • Candidates may also be asked to participate in an interview with a member of the VGEA Board of Directors.
  • Once notified that you are a winner your social security number must be given to VGEA for the college accounting purposes.
  • The scholarship will be awarded in July for the 2024 fall semester. Winners will be included in the VGEA newsletter and website and the winner’s local newspaper.
  • The awarded recipients will be invited to the VGEA Annual Meeting for the presentation. Successful candidates or someone on your behalf must attend the VGEA Annual Meeting in September 2024 for the award presentation.
  • The Scholarship awarded will be mailed directly to the college financial aid office.
  • VGEA does not discriminate based on race, color, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

Scholarship Committee Review

The Scholarship Committee will review all applications received before the deadline and will recommend recipient(s) to the Board of Directors for approval. The recommendations and the scholarship awarded will be at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee and the Board of Directors. The decision is final and not subject to review or appeal.
