January 12, 2025 – Virginia Governmental Employee Association (VGEA)

Advocating for Virginia’s State Employees and Retirees

The 2025 General Assembly session is here, and the Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) is working tirelessly to ensure your voice is heard. This year, we’re tracking key legislation, pushing for positive changes, and making sure state employees and retirees remain a priority for lawmakers.

What We’re Working On

Our lobbyist and advocacy team have reviewed over 1,600 bills introduced this session to identify those that matter most to state employees and retirees. Here are just a few highlights:

  • HB 1611: Supports eliminating unnecessary degree requirements to widen hiring opportunities for talented professionals.
  • HB 1928: Proposes gradual minimum wage increases to $15 by 2027.
  • SB 1062: Advocates for a State Government Internship Coordinator to attract and retain top talent for Virginia agencies.
  • HB 1921: Expands paid sick leave to cover all public and private sector employees.
  • SB 917: Aims to repeal restrictions on collective bargaining by public employees.
