What State Employees & Retirees Need to Know

As the 2025 General Assembly session moves toward adjournment on February 22, state employees and retirees across Virginia have a vested interest in the legislative decisions being made. From compensation and benefits to workplace conditions and retirement security, key budget amendments are being debated—amendments that could directly impact you.

At the VGEA, we’re keeping a close watch on these developments to ensure that state employees and retirees are well-informed and well-represented. Our dedicated lobbyist, Dylan Bishop, has been analyzing legislative proposals and budget amendments to identify what matters most to our community.

But legislative advocacy isn’t just about monitoring the process—it’s about making an impact. Now is the time to raise your voice.

Make Your Voice Heard

With key deadlines approaching, you still have an opportunity to engage in the decision-making process:

  • Contact Your Legislators – Your outreach can influence policy decisions. A quick email or call to your delegate or senator can make a difference.
  • Participate in Committee Meetings – Public input plays a role in shaping legislation. Attending a committee meeting or providing testimony ensures that state employees’ concerns are heard.
  • Stay Informed – Understanding proposed legislation helps you advocate effectively.

These next few days are critical. The House and Senate have each passed budget amendments, and negotiations are underway to finalize the General Assembly’s budget before it goes to the Governor for review. After that, the General Assembly will reconvene in April to take up any amendments or vetoes.
