Governor Youngkin’s Budget Bolsters Hope

Budget, General Assembly, Virginia Budget, Virginia Governor

April 9, 2024 – Virginia Governmental Employee Association (VGEA)

Richmond, VA – A pivotal development has emerged from Governor Glenn Youngkin’s office. While the VGEA initially expected a possible veto of the entire budget, we’re happy to report that an amended state budget proposal, released by the administration on April 8, 2024, safeguards the much-anticipated 3% salary increases for Virginia’s employees. This optimistic turn in events highlights our unyielding advocacy efforts and the recognition of the crucial role of state employees.

The “Common Ground Budget” and Its Implications

The governor’s “Common Ground Budget,” a $64 billion proposal, is a testament to the effective negotiation and advocacy strategies we’ve employed. The inclusion of the salary increases in this budget is not just a line item; it is a reflection of our unwavering commitment and the governor’s recognition of the indispensable value of state employees.

The General Assembly: An Opportunity to Seal the Deal

Looking ahead to the General Assembly session that reconvenes on April 17, we stand on firm ground. Our advocacy and strategic dialogues have set the stage for what we believe will be a favorable outcome. The General Assembly has the authority to finalize the budget, and with the governor’s endorsement of the raises, we’re optimistic about their retention.

VGEA’s Stance and Action Plan

Marshall Terry, the VGEA’s Executive Director, emphasizes our vigilance and continued advocacy: “We’re encouraged by the governor’s support and remain focused as we approach the General Assembly. Our goal is to ensure these raises are part of the final budget.”

The VGEA’s active engagement in the budgetary process and its advocacy efforts have been pivotal in reaching this stage, and we’re prepared to further engage with legislators to ensure that the interests of state employees are well-represented and prioritized in the final budget.

An Invigorating Call to Action

This is a moment for us to rally even more passionately. The support and collective strength of our VGEA members are vital as we navigate this final leg of the budget process. Your engagement and advocacy are the driving forces that will help cement this victory.

With Governor Youngkin’s budget proposal, we believe we’re on the verge of a significant win for state employees, and the VGEA is wholeheartedly committed to seeing this through to the end. Stay connected and empowered – together, we are making history for state employees in Virginia.
