VGEA to Amplify Advocacy in Light of New Budget Proposal

As the fiscal landscape shifts with the latest budget proposal from Governor Youngkin on December 20, 2023, the Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) is at the forefront, deciphering the implications.

The FY24-26 budget brings a mix of opportunities and challenges. Key points include proposed bonuses and raises for state employees, with specific dates outlined for their implementation. However, these proposals are just the starting point, subject to changes by the legislative body, and it’s clear that strategic advocacy is more crucial than ever.

The VGEA’s track record in influencing state budgets to benefit employees is notable. VGEA lobbyist, Dylan Bishop, recalls that, “Governor Northam’s 2020 proposed budget initially had no raises for state employees. However, our rigorous lobbying transformed that into a 2% bonus and a 3% raise, eventually increased to 5%. We’re approaching the new budget with equal determination, aiming for similar success.”

So while the budget lays out the financial framework for the next two years, the association sees it as a starting point for negotiation and improvement, and is calling on every Virginia state employee and retiree to join their efforts: “With a larger, stronger membership base, our advocacy for state employees and retirees can be even more impactful.” The larger the VGEA’s membership, the stronger our voice and the more legislators will listen.

And that unity in voice and mission is vital in ensuring fair representation and outcomes for state employees as the 2024 legislative season begins on January 10, 2024. The VGEA equips members with exclusive, comprehensive insights that are crucial for understanding, navigating, and participating in the legislative process.

State employees need to navigate these changes effectively, and they don’t need to do it alone. Those who aren’t already members of the VGEA should consider joining now as we begin the new year and new legislative session. As we continue to monitor and influence the evolving fiscal narrative in Virginia, the value of being part of a dedicated association like VGEA has never been clearer. Our members don’t just witness change; they shape it.
