For the VGEA and Its Members, It Was a Busy and Exciting 1Q

Legislative Day, Legislative Priorities

2023 General Assembly Session

Our members and lobbyists worked hard during the General Assembly session to track and advocate for important issues such as pay raises for state employees, improvements to the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), and telework. We believe that it’s important to fight for the rights and benefits of all of  Virginia’s government employees and retirees, and we’re proud to do so on their behalf.

Unfortunately, VGEA’s telework bill, SB934, fell victim to political crosswinds and died in the House General Laws Subcommittee #1. Regardless, VGEA put up a strong fight with our president, lobbyist, and members testifying. We’d encourage you to watch the video of Senator Hashmi and lobbyist, Dylan Bishop, presenting the bill, answering questions, and volleying with legislators on the committee.

We’re disappointed by the loss, but we continue our commitment to being a strong and effective voice for Virginia’s government employees and retirees, and we believe that by working together, we can achieve great things and help make the Commonwealth a better place to live and work for everyone.

Annual Legislative Day and Reception

One of the highlights of 1Q23 was our Annual Legislative Day and Reception where VGEA members had the opportunity to meet with Senators and Delegates to discuss important issues facing government employees and retirees. It was an incredible opportunity for our members to make their voices heard and advocate for the things that matter most to them.

Working to Keep Virginia Working

VGEA is the only statewide organization for the broad range of Commonwealth employees.

While there are more than 160,000 of us working in a vast array of professions and jobs, we unite in a desire to be recognized for our dedication to making Virginia a great state.

In short, The Commonwealth of Virginia works because we do!

Whether it’s increasing salaries, improving work conditions or any of the many other employee issues, VGEA is here to help address them all. A strong association with representative members is recognized and invited to decision-making tables in state government. We strive to be relevant, from the 21-year-old new employee to the 100-year-old retiree.

Every employee benefits from the experience and dedication VGEA brings. VGEA matters because you matter!
