At the Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA), we understand the fundamental role competitive pay plays in attracting and retaining top talent among state employees.

We’ve been dedicated to ensuring that Virginia’s state employees receive fair and equitable compensation for decades — compensation that aligns with their skills, experience, and contributions to the Commonwealth.

 

25% Increases Since 2019!

Our unwavering advocacy efforts have helped yield significant salary increases for Virginia state employees through the years.

Case in point: since 2019, we’ve helped secure remarkable pay raises totaling 25%!

  • 2019: A 5% wage increase for most state employees, with an additional 2.25% for those with three or more years of service.
  • 2020: A further 3% increase.
  • 2021 and 2022: Consecutive 5% increases each year, bringing the total increase from 2019 to 2022 to 18%.
  • 2023: An additional 5% increase, with an anticipated 2% raise in December, culminating in a 25% salary hike since 2019

 

Our Ongoing Fight for Fair Compensation

Despite these achievements, we recognize that the fight for fair compensation is ongoing. The public-private salary gap persists, and we remain committed to advocating for regular salary increments annually.

We strive to bridge this divide and ensure that Virginia’s state employees are valued and compensated accordingly.
 

Why Competitive Pay Matters

In today’s competitive job market, attracting and retaining skilled state employees requires offering competitive pay packages. Inadequate compensation can lead to employee dissatisfaction, turnover, and a decline in the quality of services provided to the public.

Simply put, state pay has to be attractive or people will leave. Competitive compensation is essential to retaining state employees.
 

The Rising Cost of Living

In addition to keeping pace with the private sector, state employee pay must also keep up with the rising cost of living. Inflation has been on the rise in recent years, making it even more difficult for state employees to make ends meet.

This is why, despite excellent success in pay advocacy over the past years, our work isn’t done: it’s just beginning.
