Virginia’s 2023 General Assembly Session Kicks Off

The Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) attended the opening of the Virginia General Assembly session on January 11, 2023, as the 45-day session officially gaveled in.

Our lobbyists are on the ground and ready to advocate. As the session progresses, we’ll work to ensure, as we always do, that Virginia’s public employees and retirees receive fair compensation and benefits, that their rights and interests are protected, and that their voices will be heard and their concerns will be addressed.

Throughout the session, the VGEA will provide the most relevant and timely updates and news to members as well as resources and ways for them to get involved and make their voices heard.

Legislative Updates for Members

Bills continue to drop and Friday, January 13, 2023, is the final day to introduce budget amendments. We’re waiting until then to email our first legislative update for the 2023 session to VGEA members.

Those updates come from our lobbyists after they attend sessions, meet with legislators, and comb through hundreds of pages of information to extract the pieces that are meaningful and important to us. That information is summarized and provided to VGEA members as an exclusive benefit of membership.

Get Involved & Be Heard During this Legislative Session

• VGEA Member Cohort: Discuss ideas with VGEA members in our private Facebook group exclusively for members.
• Attend the VGEA’s Lobby Day and Legislative Reception on Thursday, February 9. Both events are free to VGEA members and are a great opportunity to build relationships, discuss issues, collaborate, and explore solutions to issues facing state employees and retirees. RSVP now.
• Email the VGEA Team: When you email info@vgea.org, your email is received by our executive team. Depending on the nature of the question, we often ask for guidance and thoughts from our lobbyists and our experienced board.
• Contact Your Legislators Directly: One of the most important ways we can make our voices heard and effect change is by contacting our legislators directly. Whether it’s through phone calls, emails, or letters, reaching out to your elected officials is a powerful way to let them know what issues are important to you and your community. Find out who your legislators are at  whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov.
• Follow the General Assembly Session Online: Head over to lis.virginia.gov to view a list of meetings. Look for topics that interest you and watch the live sessions or watch archived videos.
