About Us

What is the VGEA?

The Virginia Governmental Employees Association (VGEA) is a voluntary, non-partisan group of State employees and retirees who advocate on matters of pay, health care, workplace protections, and retirement.  Our lobbying and advocacy is focused on the:

  • Virginia General Assembly
  • Office of the Governor
  • Department of Human Resource Management and
  • Virginia Retirement System Board of Trustees

Founded in 1959, but with roots traced to 1939, the VGEA has won many legislative victories to improve the lives of State employees and retirees, enhance public services and protect retirement benefits. With public employee pay and benefits under attack, protecting these hard won victories is now more important than ever. Join VGEA now and make a positive difference on your future pay and benefits by strengthening VGEA Advocacy and to ensure that you receive all the latest legislative information.

VGEA member dues directly support our lobbying efforts (including our political action committee (GEPAC) and pay for communications such as the ForeSight newsletter, VGEA eNews and this website; which all exist to keep members informed about important legislative activities and issues that may impact your job, pay and benefits.

VGEA membership also has its benefits, including: $2,500 in Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance benefit for members and their family at no cost to the member, low-cost insurance programs such as accidental death and dismemberment, auto, cancer and specified disease or other health event, critical illness, dental, group term life, homeowners, hospital indemnity, identity theft, legal, and long-term care, member discounts with savings at businesses across the state and nation plus $10,000 in college scholarships awarded annually.

A Board of Directors composed of state employees and retirees is the governing body of the VGEA.  Board members are nominated and elected by the entire VGEA membership. The Board of Directors is responsible for retaining a staff and carrying out the mission of the VGEA in accordance with its bylaws.
